What is Children's Yoga?

Children's Yoga is about engaging children in their own development.

It's about meeting them at their stage of development, in an age appropriate and playful way, teaching them life skills for physical, mental and emotional well being.

What is children's yoga?

Children's yoga isn't adult yoga. It isn't about perfecting yoga postures and techniques.

Children's yoga is different for different children, depending on their physical and cognitive development. It's fundamentally about introducing children to a healthy lifestyle. Children's yoga starts by introducing children to the yoga basics and providing them with opportunities to start learning breathing and relaxation techniques.

The challenge is to maintain their interest in their yoga practise. Luckily, yoga is a flexible practise and can be adapted in many different ways, which include ways to engage children. Children are curious and have a thirst for knowledge. They have a never ending quest to know 'why'.

The ancient yogis who developed the practise of yoga did so with some help! They believed and understood that the bounty and knowledge of the world is endless. By keenly observing nature and the world around them, they found learning in the world. They found clues and ways for human beings to develop healthy lifestyles. Early yoga practises, in particular, the asanas were inspired by nature. The Yogis developed asanas that imitated nature's natural structures, the trees, the mountains and it's animals, the cats, the dogs, the eagles, and more.

Children love learning about the world. Children love learning about others. Children love learning about themselves. By teaching children through the eyes of the ancient yogis, who were keen observers of their environments, children's yoga guides children to understand the origins and purpose of yoga.

Yoga is more than just physical movements, breathing and relaxation

Yoga is more than practising yoga in a class. Underpinning yoga, are a set of values and principles, which provide a guide for daily yogic living. Children's yoga classes also help children understand yoga philosophy, developing a respect for and an understanding of how to live in joy, in health, with wisdom and compassion
